At Evolution Rehab, we consider that one of the ultimate expressions of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular health is through the act of pain free, beautiful, efficient, effortless and flowing movement.
Beautiful movement doesn’t have to remain within the exclusive and stereotypical remit of those who are involved in professional sport or dance. Whether it’s the office worker lightly and effortlessly bounding up the tube escalators on the way to work, or the pensioner who delicately tends to the flowers in her garden with a grace and poise which belies her age. Beautiful movement is not simply a question of aesthetics as a goal in itself. It is the visual manifestation of physical efficiency which is realised as an expression of how an individual effectively balances and manages forces through the body.
The ability to regularly and continuously express ourselves through movement should also be looked at as a necessary requirement to keep and maintain the healthy use of our bodies. The attainment of specific physical markers such as strength, cardiovascular fitness or joint flexibility provide an individual with a greater potential to achieve skilled movement but without the integration of particular movement attributes (such as mobility, skill, balance, timing, coordination and body weight application), these specific markers may not provide a great deal of assistance in the ability to efficiently carry out a set physical task or live healthily as a human being. For example, just because an individual has developed a great deal of strength through training in the gym, this does not directly translate into their ability to perform better in their chosen sport or activity. If this rationale were true then the best athletes would also be the strongest. In most situations, this is simply not the case!
Healthy Movers Program
At Evolution Rehab, the main principle we are trying to promote is the philosophy of embracing exercise as a medium of skill development which provides individuals the ability to both maintain and improve the functional use of their bodies without fear of adverse physical consequence. Hence, even though you may not like running as a formal hobby or activity, do you not think it is important to maintain the ability to do so without fear of injury? This philosophy defines our approach as the need for exercise to be used to both maintain and expand our skillful capacity to run, jump, climb and balance. With the attainment of the physical markers such as lowered body fat, strength, cardiovascular fitness and limb flexibility being achieved as a positive consequence of one’s exploration into movement skill and efficiency. Unfortunately, many modern training methodologies focus purely upon the attainment of specific fitness goals such as strength, aesthetics and lowered body fat. Whilst these physical markers are valued, they are only a small selection amonst the many different training goals that we aim to help our clients achieve when they sign up to the Evolution Rehab Training program.
Here at Evolution Rehab, we provide a specific healthy movers program to give clients a solid foundation in order to help point them in the right direction towards attaining good movement health.
The initial Healthy Movers Program is a 12-26 week training program aimed at providing our clients with a variety of foundation movement skills sets to get them physically prepared to safely be able to participate in an active lifestyle and general sporting activity.
There are several components to the movement program involving a combination of mobility/flexibility work, traditional strength training, connective tissue conditioning, balance training, co-ordination drills and an introduction to gymnastic strength training.
Although this program can provide a wealth of benefits to high level athletes and experienced sportsmen/women, this program is actually aimed at inexperienced exercisers who want to learn the tools to help them bridge the gap towards safely engaging within any sporting/physical activity. The main focus of the program is to help provide them with a solid foundation in movement skills with the purpose to improve their ability to learn/pick up movement skills more easily and effectively.
